The Pokémon Trading Card Game is gearing up for one of its most ambitious releases yet with the upcoming Black Bolt and White Flare sets! Launching in Japan on June 6th, these dual sets will feature all 156 Pokémon from the Unova region, making them the Gen V spiritual successor to last year’s wildly popular Pokémon Card 151. The English-language release will follow on July 18th, with details expected soon.

New Card Reveals: Highlights Across All Stages

Following the initial reveal at Japan’s Champions League tournament, even more cards have been revealed, showcasing fan-favorite Pokémon lines and powerful Trainer cards.

Electric Line: Tynamo to Eelektross

  • Tynamo begins modestly with Hold Still, healing 10 damage for free.

  • Eelektrik returns with its iconic Dynamotor Ability, letting you recycle [L] Energy from the discard.

  • Eelektross ramps things up with Thunder Fang (60 damage + Paralysis chance) and Buzz Flip, which can deal up to 400 damage based on coin flips.

Colorless Line: Lillipup to Stoutland

  • Lillipup and Herdier offer utility with Play Rough and Roar.

  • Stoutland has a major comeback with Special Fang, dealing up to 200 damage if it has a Special Energy attached.

Grass Line: Snivy to Serperior ex

  • Snivy and Servine bring light utility, but Serperior ex is the star here.

    • Royal Cheer Ability boosts damage from all your Pokémon.

    • Grass Order hits for 150 damage and lets you fetch 3 cards from your deck.

Fire Line: Tepig to Emboar

  • Emboar features Inferno Fandango, allowing unlimited [R] Energy attachments per turn.

  • Victini is also making waves with V Force, which hits for 120 damage—but only if you have a full Bench.

Water Line: Oshawott to Samurott

  • Samurott offers battlefield control with Strong Currents, forcing both players to switch Actives.

  • Energy Slash stacks damage with each Energy on it, setting up potential KOs.

ex Pokémon Returns

  • Reshiram ex and Zekrom ex both feature scaling attacks that get stronger as your opponent takes Prizes, mimicking comeback mechanics.

  • Kyurem ex deals widespread chip damage with Blizzard Burst, damaging all Benched Pokémon based on Prize progression.

Introducing “BWR” Rarity Cards

Among the most exciting reveals are the new “BWR” (Black & White Rare) cards—ultra-stylized monochromatic versions of Reshiram ex and Zekrom ex, meant to honor the theme of the sets and the legacy of the Black & White era.

This unique rarity will also be featured in event promos, including an exclusive Victini card to be distributed during Japan’s summer tournaments.

Victini BWR Battle Tournaments: June–August

From June 14th to August 31st, Japan will host “Victini BWR Battle” events where players build decks from Black Bolt and White Flare booster packs and compete for prizes. Winners receive the exclusive monochrome Victini BWR promo, while all participants will get:

  • A one-card promo pack (featuring 1 of 8 possible promos, including a chase Full Art Cheren)

  • Four stamped Energy cards (from a set of eight)

Players can also enter a lottery to win the Victini promo by hosting at-home deck-building sessions and reporting their experience to Pokémon. Only 2,000 winners will be selected.

Returning Mechanics & Trainers

Several popular Trainer and Energy cards are returning:

  • Energy Retrieval, Air Balloon, and Professor’s Research (Juniper) are back in their classic forms.

  • Hilda is a brand-new Supporter that searches for an Evolution Pokémon and an Energy card.

  • Cheren returns as a draw Supporter.

  • Prism Energy and Ignition Energy provide flexible or accelerated energy mechanics, the latter being particularly useful for Evolution-focused decks.

Deluxe Packs, Collector Products, and Schedule

In addition to standard 7-card boosters, special 35-card “deluxe packs” will be sold for 1,450 yen. Each includes the contents of five packs and guarantees an Illustration Rare. The sets will also bring back the horizontal holofoil paper from the original Black & White era.

A 3-pocket card file will launch alongside the sets on June 6th, bundling:

  • Three packs each of Black Bolt and White Flare

  • A Victini Illustration Rare promo

  • Retail price: 2,640 yen
